EASTWOOD 29
v
WEST HARBOUR 42
Eastwood finished their 2008 Tooheys New Shute Shield campaign on a losing note when they were defeated by WestHarbour 42-29 at Concord Oval.
This match was characterized by the lack of defence with a number of soft tries scored by both sides.WestHarbour had the better of the first half with winger Nick Reilly scoring one of his customary length-of-the-field tries within minutes of the kick-off followed by a further two tries by centre Lester Salanoa and winger John Sinisa.Fullback Ben Martin’s perfect kicking record gave the Pirates a 21 to nil half-time lead.
Eastwood struck back early in the second half with a try to winger Nick Batger who finished off a perfectly executed backline move to score in the corner. The conversion by Ben Batger and a successful penalty closed the gap to 21-10.WestHarbour responded with two quick tries to extend their lead to 33-10 before Josh Holmes scored under the posts to allow Batger the easiest of conversions to reduce the margin to 35-22.
But Eastwood’s hopes of finishing on a winning note faded when Sinisa scored his third try for the match. Martin added the extras for a match winning lead of 42-22.
Flanker Gareth Palamo was rewarded with a well deserved final try under the posts for Ben Batger to convert for a fulltime score score of 42-29.Incidentally this was the identical score line when these two sides met in Round 11 however on that occasion Eastwood came out on top. With the 1sts finished for the season, Woods supporters are now looking for their 2nd and 3rd grades sides to carry the flag.
Whilst both teams went down to WestHarbour on Saturday, Eastwood took the opportunity to rest a number of players carrying injuries in readiness for the semi finals.Keen rugby supporters are enthused with the prospects of both teams but particularly the Reserve grade side which finished in second place on the Colin Caird Shield Competition ladder.
The side has a number of players with first grade experience such as half Dave Rimmer, winger Nathan Powyer, centre Chris Donnelly and fullback Barney Wood along with forwards David Goulter, Chris Hill, Seva Rokobaro and James Keith.
With young guns Lachlan McCaffery, Nick Gelling and Luke Brecht the team has performed remarkable throughout the season and have excellent prospects of taking out the Premiership.
Eastwood’s 2nds will have next week off before playing the highest ranked winner from Week 1 on the 14 September.
Third Grade Elimination Semi Finals will be played on Sunday 7 September at Woollahra Oval.
1st Grade Colts will play their Elimination Semi Final on Sunday 7 September at ForshawRugbyPark..
